How the digital economy is revolutionising companies

The purpose of the IBM Think Summit is to share the latest technological trends

Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud and cyber security were some of the topics addressed at the IBM Think Summit. This year´s conference, held on 30 May, brought some of the US technology corporation´s leading researchers to Lisbon.

In an age dominated by the digital economy, the collection and processing of personal data and security were some of the main topics under debate. This is what Sam Lightstone, a high-ranking member of staff at IBM, talked about in a presentation focused on the idea of the difficulty in measuring the impact of emerging technologies such as AI.

The automation of processes at companies was another topic discussed. The increase in Portuguese exports – which currently account for half the country´s GDP – is also partly due to the fact companies have embraced digital technology. "Portugal is doing well, but we need to speed up. We need to invest in the training of personnel", said Pedro Siza Vieira, the Minister of the Economy, at the end of the event.

The debate was also attended by Carlos Gomes da Silva, chairman of the Galp Executive Board, who spoke about cognitive assistants, developed in partnership with IBM, and which has revolutionised the prospection of seabed oil. “Our success rate has risen to between 16% and 20%.”

The event also brought together some of IBM´s leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence, an increasing presence in our daily routine, and sustainability and energy efficiency were also addressed by different speakers.
