“The energy sector is where it's all happening”

A chat with Carlos Gomes da Silva, CEO of Galp, about sustainability, technology, efficiency and natural gas, key issues when addressing energy transition and the world we desire in the future

Aware of the fact we cannot continue to consume resources at a faster rate than they can be generated, we need to find alternative energies and invest in the efficient use of resources. It is this scenario in which natural gas arises, and particularly liquefied natural gas, whose flexible means of transportation guarantee it a greater capacity to globalise. Accounting for a mere 10% of the overall natural gas market today, it is not by chance that demand is expected to increase in the coming decades. This is due to the fact, states Carlos Gomes da Silva, “that any imbalances between supply and demand in relation to this fuel will be offset precisely by liquefied gas”.

The future will involve an economy that is less geared to energy and more reliant on technology. However, due to the fact a transition process always involves change, Galp has been adapting, implementing “energy transition” in its practices and strategy, of which natural gas is a part, and expanding its portfolio to renewable based energies, while not forgetting the new holistic vision of the new consumer profile, which demands increasingly efficient solutions with fewer resources.

As far as the CEO is concerned, “it isn´t the strongest or the most capable that manage to survive or surpass themselves, but those who manage to adapt, ensuring that such adaptation is achieved in one way or another. What we are seeing is that everything is faster and more immediate, with the advantages and drawbacks this entails”. Furthermore, he adds, “if there´s a sector in which it´s worth working and endeavouring today, then it´s the energy sector, which is where it´s all happening”.
