How 5G will revolutionise city life

The technology presented at the Smart Cities Summit illustrated how it will be possible to use vehicles remotely in safety

Cities are undergoing comprehensive changes. Smart mobility, integrated transport systems, Internet of Things (IoT), energy management and smart lighting are concepts that have become part and parcel of daily urban life. One of the technologies that promises to revolutionise the near future is 5G Live.

This was one of the highlights of the Portugal Smart Cities Summit, held in Lisbon. A real demonstration of this technology with a simulation of an emergency using remotely-driven vehicles. The new technological generation is more effective with regard to response time, or in other words, involves less latency.

According to the message conveyed by NOS – whose technology and testing were prepared in partnership with Huawei –, “5G will transform smart cities into super-smart societies. Safer, more efficient, sustainable, competitive and closer to people”.

Does this mean that 5.0 societies are on the way? As far as Manuel Ramalho Eanes, a director of NOS, is concerned, the aim is to prepare towns and cities for the near future, where technology will simplify citizens´ lives. “All the partnerships we´ve forged – Oeiras, Lagoa, Moita and Vila Nova de Famalicão – are intended to ensure these municipalities are prepared for the potential opportunities of the new mobile generation.”
