Making it happen

Nuno Garrido is 33 years old and is responsible for Performance Analysis and Leader of the Refining 4.0 digital transformation project in Lisbon, Sines and Matosinhos

Nuno Garrido is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in Molecular Simulation. He gets excited when he talks about his responsibilities as Manager of Refinery Performance Analysis at Galp, which he performs at the two Galp refineries – Sines and Matosinhos. His big mission is to “make it happen”, which is why he is one of the crucial engines to make the large refinery enterprise work together as a well-oiled machine. He applied for the Galp trainee programme in 2011, but he took on his biggest challenge in 2014, when he joined the managing directors’ team at Galp’s refinery. Today he faces his biggest challenge yet in the area of digitisation and business intelligence, which is essential to optimise the production process of the two refineries with a view to complete integration. “We are able to follow what’s happening at each moment, and so any flaws can be immediately corrected. In essence, digitising information means having more time to analyse data, turning them into relevant evidence”, explains the team leader, who is developing this innovative project. He enjoys going back to his roots, in São Pedro do Sul, where he usually goes on long walks. That is his escape but not the only one, as he enjoys playing the piano and the trumpet, which he practices whenever he can.

Energisers – an exhibition about people – portrays Galp employees based in Portugal, Spain, Mozambique and Brazil who ensure the necessary energy to guarantee the world does not stop.
The result of a partnership with VISÃO magazine, this photo report created by photographers Arlindo Camacho (Portugal), Enric Vives-Rubio (Spain), Mauro Vombe (Mozambique) and Jardiel Carvalho (Brazil) shows us, through a unique perspective, who these people really are beyond their professional role. How they spend their days, where they come from, how they live, what they did to get where they are and what dreams they still wish to fulfil.
