Between Earth and Space

Sérgio Cersosimo is 55 years old and is a geophysicist and assistant to Geosciences. At Galp, he is developing an innovative artificial intelligence project

He spends hours looking at the stars, but he keeps his feet on the ground. Sérgio Cersosimo is a geophysicist at Galp and is responsible for developing an innovative project of Artificial Intelligence applied to Geophysical Engineering. He was born in Buenos Aires, in Argentina, where the famous writer Jorge Luís Borges lived. In fact, he still carries with him a strong childhood memory: meeting the writer when he was riding around on his bike. He asked Sérgio if he knew who he was, and whether he enjoyed reading. Sérgio did know who he was, and he did enjoy reading. So much so that he learned to build telescopes this way and developed his biggest hobby: astronomy and the love of looking at the sky. He wanted to be an astronomer, but he ended up developing digital projects to interpret what goes on kilometres below the earth’s surface. “Seismic interpretation is like performing an ultrasound of the earth, and that’s how we analyse geological structures, which we interpret to better learn about oil and gas reservoirs”, he says enthusiastically. Sérgio has worked for Galp since 2012, but he still finds time to teach Reservoir Geophysics at Lisbon’s Faculty of Science, as a guest lecturer. A life filled with challenges.

Energisers – an exhibition about people – portrays Galp employees based in Portugal, Spain, Mozambique and Brazil who ensure the necessary energy to guarantee the world does not stop.
The result of a partnership with VISÃO magazine, this photo report created by photographers Arlindo Camacho (Portugal), Enric Vives-Rubio (Spain), Mauro Vombe (Mozambique) and Jardiel Carvalho (Brazil) shows us, through a unique perspective, who these people really are beyond their professional role. How they spend their days, where they come from, how they live, what they did to get where they are and what dreams they still wish to fulfil.
